Thank you
As 2020 comes to an end, we’d like to thank everyone that’s been a part of the AGB journey. We started this Substack in the middle of June and put out our first issue on Starbucks on July 6, 2020. (As a side note, it’s still one of the most read issues even though no emails were sent out.) With the help of many on Fintwit, AGB has grown to an email list of 715 in six months!
Goals for AGB
We don’t have specific goals in mind other than creating a library of analyses on good businesses. Learning in public, having thoughtful discussions and adding value are it.
Eventually we would like to expand on what we write about (maybe businesses in transition from mediocre to good?), but since this isn’t a full-time job, AGB will likely stay in its current structure for the time being.
You as readers can still expect an analysis on a good business every other Monday at 1pm ET, resuming on January 11, 2021.
Thoughts on writing
Here are some thoughts on writing on the Internet after six months of experience:
A rigid schedule is a blessing and a curse, but more of a blessing. It forces you to go with “good enough” (and not perfect), which is actually good enough.
The actual writing part takes the least amount of time (at least for me). Reading, thinking about how to frame arguments, and gathering data take the most time.
A framework is useful though it should be improved upon over time. Luckily for AGB, the conclusion (which can be the hardest part) is set in advance.
Topics discussed in early writing are the easiest because you draw from what you know. Staying on a schedule after you’ve tapped your existing knowledge base is hard.
For the reason above, writers that put out long form content once a week or even up to three times per week are super impressive. Respect!
Admitting that you’re wrong or that someone else has a better argument is a good thing. We can’t be right all the time.
Happy New Year and thank you for your support!
Great job sir Hamilton, I like your articles a lot!
Cant agree more on the rigid schedule rather being a blessing. I have the same with my 5 bullet Sunday series.
Keep them coming!
Congrats, keep up the good work!
